There may be nothing more special than the changes your body goes through during pregnancy. While it may not feel like it at the time – between the nausea, heartburn, insomnia, you name it – creating a new life inside of you is as magical as it gets. Maternity photo shoots are a great way to commemorate this occasion in your life. I recently had the opportunity to do one of my own with one of my closest friends – the amazing Olia Luis. Olia is a San Diego Maternity and Newborn Photographer, the lead photographer and owner of Olia Luis Photography. She has an amazing eye and maternity shoots are one of her specialties.
I’m not going to lie – I was a bit unsure about the idea of doing this photo shoot at first. Now that I’m near the end of my pregnancy, there are certainly plenty of days when I didn’t exactly feel my most beautiful. Between the exhaustion, shortness of breath, and my growing belly – I wasn’t exactly at a point where I would thought I’d be confident in front of a camera. Olia was persistent with me though, and showed me examples of her work with other mamas-to-be and it was reassuring to see how gorgeous they all turned out in the end.
Another concern I had about doing the shoot was the age old problem – what to wear?!? This was one of my primary hold ups, because while I definitely wanted something beautiful and memorable, I was reluctant to spend on maternity gown I’d probably only wear once. Luckily, Olia had me covered on this one. It turns out that she had a relationship with an amazing company – Mama Bump Rentals – that rents out stunning maternity gowns for occasions just like this. In some cases they may also have arrangements with talented maternity photographers like Olia, and may provide rentals at discounts or even for free! The rental was extremely easy and their site had a variety of fabulous dresses to choose from. When my dress arrived, it also came with a pre-printed label and bag to return the dress with. Anything to make my life easier while being pregnant is a PLUS!
The bottom line – you don’t have to be scared about putting yourself out there and doing a maternity shoot. It’s a special time in your life, and even through you may not feel it, you look beautiful. If you’re anything like me, after seeing the final products, you’ll be thrilled that you did it.
So this is it – my maternity photo shoot, complete with a cameo from my reluctant husband (he hates photo shoots – haha). I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! Thanks Olia!
