A baby shower is something that many moms-to-be consider one of the highlights of their pregnancy. Surrounded by friends and family, you get to celebrate your journey to motherhood – and you and your bump get to be the star of the show! My shower took place before I started this blog, but I loved it so much that I wanted to share it with all of you!
We decided to go with an Italian Amalfi themed decor, along with a twist on an old saying — “When life gives you lemons, you make babies!”
Sticking with our theme, one of the first things we had to go out and get were the lemons. A LOT of lemons! Fortunately we have a couple of productive lemon trees in our backyard and that gave us a good start. I love using bright, colorful fruits as decor. Not only are they usually cheaper to buy in bulk than traditional flowers, but they can really they liven up a space — and can eat them when you’re done. Lemons AND lemonade!
For this party, I also went to a local florist and purchased a small selection of pastel colored flowers and a large amount of greenery. Eucalyptus leaves and branches are a great, and cheap, way to add some green to your decor. I created an an archway using these and a few scattered lemons and hung them on a photography backdrop frame. The flowers were scattered in an assortment of clear jars that we placed around the patio.
One thing that I bought a while back, and that gets a ton of mileage, is a wood framed chalkboard. I use a great set of colorful multi-surface pencils and always create a design for my parties.
Another go-to for me are colorful, stylish printouts in frames. Frames in various sizes and colors are something that I always keep an eye out for when I’m out at places like Michael’s or Home Goods. I keep them in my garage or a storage closet and use them for little signs that I create and have printed.
After searching around with local party rental companies, I was able to find the most amazing bar set-up. It was a classic wooden bar-top with these gorgeous ceramic patterned tiles. This was definitely the standout show-stopper and fit the theme perfectly.
The rental company also had a couple of amazing, high-back wicker chairs that I rented. Not only did they look great in pictures and add to the decor, they made me feel like a queen on her throne when I was opening gifts!
Another way we added some budget-friendly decor was with a collection of rustic-looking wooden crates and wicker baskets. We were able to get a bunch of these for free from our florist and a local liquor store, and our rental company provided some for us as well. Storage decor can always be useful as you can style it either up or down to fit a wide variety of themes for a party.
Food and Drink
We decided to use one our favorite catering companies for our food – Key To The Kitchen of Carlsbad, CA. They are our go to pretty much all of our parties, and they created a delicious selection of finger foods and an amazing charcuterie plate that didn’t last long! Catering companies can run all over the map in terms of pricing, but we had done our homework between Yelp, Google and talking to friends, and landed on them a while back. With a bit of legwork, you may be surprised about what a catering company can provide for your budget.
Who doesn’t love fun and creative cocktails for a party? Even though I had to sit this one out, I knew I’d probably be the only one. 🤪For this part, we started with a name and worked backwards with the recipe. My husband used to be a bartender in college so he helped me fine tune some delicious options. The Drunken Saylor was a hit!
Of course, we didn’t forget the mom-friendly mocktails! We stocked the party with a selection of Fre Wines, who have the best selection of non-alcoholic wines – and have been a staple in my house during pregnancy. You can check out a few of my favorite recipes in my blog!
Can’t forget the literal icing on the cake – dessert! We went with some adorable, and delicious donut towers as well as an assortment of cupcakes and cookies that had frosting that almost looked like the tiles on the bar!
Cute games are a staple at baby showers. This party was more of a coed, non-traditional baby shower, so we went with an easy one. We left out a stack of diapers and markers for the guests to leave notes and tips for my husband and I in our soon-to-be roles as parents. On of our favorites from my husband’s sister — “Your parents are full of $#!@ too.” 🤣
I’m blessed to have an amazing friend – Olia Luis – who also is an incredible professional photographer and she always is there to help capture everything. For this party, we wanted to have Olia enjoy herself a bit, so we used the services of the amazing Kristina Davini as well.
I hope you enjoyed the party!
